Hematology is the medical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the blood and the organs that participate in its production, such as the bone marrow, the spleen or the lymph nodes, among others. Likewise, it deals with the components of the blood (red blood cells, erythrocytes, platelets, leukocytes, hemoglobin, plasma) and their characteristics (coagulation mechanism).
Diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases. In, Anemias, low platelets and neutropenia.
Transfusion and monitoring of blood and its derivatives, red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
Treatment of conditions due to abnormal bleeding and thrombosis.
Diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer. Example: Leukemias, lymphomas, myelomas.
Most of the patients who consult a hematologist for the first time do so at the direction of their treating physician, who, based on the results of the blood tests he performs, finds some abnormality, or on the medical history it is suggested that they have alterations in the blood system or in the lymphatic system.
It is advisable to visit the hematologist every year from the age of 38 – 40, this is because blood is one of the most important tissues in our body, and it is the most important tissue to perform vital functions such as; breathe, form substances, heal, and more.
